Natural Ways to Make Your House Smell Great

how to make your house smell great Natural Ways to Make Your House Smell Great

You could have the most beautiful home in the neighborhood. Nicely groomed yard. Lovely interior design. However, if you have a funky, unpleasant smell inside of the house, it won’t matter how beautiful the decor is. Think about all of the times that you’ve wrinkled your nose at a smell that you just couldn’t quite put your finger on, but knew it wasn’t good. If you have this problem there is hope. You don’t need to spend big bucks on store-bought air fresheners or potpourri when you can make your own. When your home smells clean and fresh, you’ll find that your mood will improve and will feel more relaxed. We’re going to show you some natural ways that you can make your home smell absolutely divine.

Start Off with a Pot of Rosemary

If you want to make your home smell nice and earthy, there is no better herb to turn to than rosemary. It’s easy to grow and keep as part of your personal stash of herbs. You can cook and clean with it and even freshen your home with this herbal delight. All you need for this mixture is to put a sliced lemon into a pot or crockpot with a few pieces of rosemary and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract.

If you are using a pot on the stovetop, then you’ll let this mixture simmer for most of the day. For a crockpot, all you’ll need to do is keep it on the lowest setting and wait for the scent to waft through the entire home. One thing to note is that you will have to eventually replace this concoction since it will only keep for a day or two.

Create Your Own Potpourri Bouquet

When you think of potpourri, thoughts of bowls full of dried out flowers may come to mind. There is more to it though. Making your own potpourri gives you the power to create your own unique scent bouquet using interesting color combinations. First, you’ll need to pick the type of flowers that you want. Calendula, peonies, geraniums, and especially lavender are great choices to use as dried flowers.

If you want to give the potpourri more interest, then consider adding pinecones, seed pods or holly. To create the scent you’ll need to pick your favorite essential oil and fixative. You’ll add a few drops of your essential oil and fixative together. From there you’ll need to cover it for up to a week. This will allow the scent to fully infuse with the fixative. Afterward, you’ll mix it together with the dried potpourri and cover it again for up to a month before using. While this process is a little more involved, it’s well worth it as a natural way to add a unique fragrance to your home.

Combine Oranges with Cloves

Oranges are known for having a variety of health benefits. From getting your daily dose of Vitamin C to working as an insect repellent, this fruit has some kick. Cloves are also known as an anti-inflammatory aid in addition to stimulating digestion in the body. What happens though when you combine these two things? You get a nice air freshener.

You can poke individual cloves into the skin of an orange to create a pomander ball. This is an old-fashioned method of making an air freshener for the home.

Create Your Own Oil Diffuser

While you can always buy reed diffusers from a number of big box and home decor stores, the oils that are used often have a lot of additives that are not so great. However, making your own diffuser doesn’t take much thought. Plus, you can do it without using heat as many store-bought diffusers often use.

What you need are a set of bamboo skewers, your favorite essential oil, and a carrier oil such as sweet almond or safflower oil. From there, all you need to do is to fill a vase with 30-60 drops of essential oil and then add in the carrier oil. You’ll place the skewers into the oil and then you’re done. The oil will be diffused through the skewers.

Make an Air Freshener from Baking Soda

Baking soda has been used for years as a cleaning agent, refrigerator freshener, and as an additive in recipes. Another use for this versatile powder is as an air freshener for rooms. What you’ll need is a ½ cup of baking soda, 10-15 drops of an essential oil (you can adjust this and keep increasing the drops until the scent is right), a thick tapestry needle, and a jar with a lid.

From there, you’ll pour the baking soda into the jar and mix in the essential drops and shake it up. Afterward, you can add on the lid and poke a few holes into it using the needle.

Use Coffee to Absorb Smells

We know that coffee gives you a much-needed pick up in the morning, but did you know that it can also be used for the home?
